Dorothy Lockhart Manchester
Dorothy "Dot" Lockhart (Pierce) Manchester, 97, left this world March 18, 2012 after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Harvey M. Manchester.
She was the daughter of the late Grace Lockhart Pierce and Roy Pierce. In her later years she particularly looked forward to her weekly chats with her sister Barbara, visits from her dedicated nephew Gary and other family and friends. She lost her sight to glaucoma in her 40s and for the rest of her life recognized visitors by the sound of their voice. Dot would always ask about family and other important aspects of their lives, recalling birthdays and special events. This was a remarkable gift that endeared her to friends, family and nursing home staff. Her perspective of events long ago was a unique window into the past.
Dot loved music; she learned to play the piano and for several years traveled with a driver to play for residents of other nursing homes. Using Braille cards, she always enjoyed a competitive game of cribbage. She lived a happy life of simple dignity and humility, stoically accepting the challenges that her Lord laid in her path.
Dorothy leaves behind her loving sister, Barbara Ohliger, and brother-in-law Fritz, of Carlsbad, Calif., 11 nieces and nephews, their spouses and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the sister in-law of the late Stuart A. Manchester and E. Gladys Manchester.
Dorothy's family extends heartfelt thanks to Kent Regency Center and West Bay Manor for their many years of service and care.
A memorial service is being planned for the future; please contact her nephew, Scott Manchester, at email@example.com for details.
