Drive sober or get pulled over

The Warwick Police Department will join the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which runs from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1. On Aug. 22, we will combine efforts and work jointly with a special DUI Task Force:

There will be 22 local law enforcement departments and the RI State Police participating to deter, detect and arrest impaired drivers.

More than 90 additional police officers and troopers will support the more than 125 officers assigned to patrol shifts in these communities.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s Office of Highway Safety (RIDOT OHS) is providing funding for this important highway safety effort.

In May of 2014, the Rhode Island DUI Task Force was deployed for the first time in 10 communities. In only four hours, 11 motorists suspected of driving impaired by drugs or alcohol were arrested. This second deployment of the Task Force will deploy more than twice as many officers and will cover twice as many communities.

Every 53 minutes, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash, and every 90 seconds; someone is injured because of this entirely preventable crime. During the weekend of Aug. 22, Warwick, West Warwick, Coventry, East Providence, Barrington, Warren, Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, Tiverton, Little Compton, South Kingstown, North Kingstown, Richmond, Charlestown, Narragansett, Hopkinton, West Greenwich, East Greenwich, Jamestown, Westerly and the State Police will team up to form the Rhode Island DUI Task Force.

Officers will be out to deter, detect and arrest impaired drivers. “We want to keep everyone safe on our roadways and to prevent the senseless injuries and deaths because someone made the wrong choice,” said Lt. Michael Gilbert of the Warwick Police in a press release last Friday.
