EDGE OF TOMORROW
Joyce and Don Fowler

* * * ½

(Sci-fi/action/war/love story)

Tom Cruise plays Major Cage, a futuristic army PR person and self-acclaimed coward who wants no part seeing action. When General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) orders him to be imbedded in a frontline, Normandy-type attack, Cage tries desperately to get out of it.

International forces are fighting the alien Mimics, horrible looking creatures with huge tentacles, in France. Cage is fitted with armor and weapons and dropped on the beach, where he has no fighting skills and is quickly killed.

He wakes up over and over again back at the base in true “Groundhog Day” fashion, greets his commanding officer repeatedly ordering him “On your feet, maggot.”

In the battles he meets Rita (Emily Blunt), a mysterious soldier who holds the key to his daily dying routine.

“What the heck is going on?” both Cage and the audience wonder. What’s the connection with Rita and her mad scientist friend (Noah Taylor)?

Rita trains Cage to be combat ready. They return to the battle over and over, where Cage is killed but lives to fight another day.

The battle scenes are exciting, especially in 3D if you want to pay the extra money. They do get a bit tedious at times, but the action never slows up.

Figuring what the aliens want, how they plan to get it, and how Cage plans to stop them gets a bit confusing and implausible at times, but this is summertime action movie sci-fi, so just go with the flow.

The 3D has objects flying at you and the special effects are overwhelming. Cruise and Blunt are very convincing, and you’ll enjoy the sexual tension that slowly develops between them.

The ending is a bit weird, but so is the premise. If you are a fan of the genre, you will probably enjoy “Edge of Tomorrow.”

Rated PG-13, with lots of violence and a bit of profanity.
