Elves for Elderly, a program of Seniors RULE (Resources Unlimited – Liaisons for Elderly) brought some early Christmas cheer to the Prime Time Senior Living Expo yesterday at Warwick Mall. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island is a co-sponsor of the expo. Under the elves program, the all-women Seniors RULE members visit nursing homes and learn what patients would like for Christmas. Those requests are then placed on stars hung from a tree at the mall customer service desk where shoppers can fill the requests. Gifts are returned to the desk where the “elves” pick them up and wrap them for delivery in December. Last year through the generosity of shoppers, the elves were able to provide 1,000 gifts to nursing home patients. Here, Maxine Hutchins, who runs Seniors RULE and started the gift program, and Patty Martucci of Westbay Community Action display some of the many “star” wishes they aim to fulfill this holiday season.
