Entertaining 'Legends in Concert' at Foxwoods

Where else could you find Prince, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Taylor Swift all on the stage together? Especially since all but Swift have gone to the great casino in the sky.

For the 11th straight season, Foxwoods’ Fox Theatre is hosting the dazzling, colorful and entertaining tribute extravaganza, “Legends in Concert.”

The good news is that the singers actually look and sound like the entertainers they are portraying. And to make it even more realistic, huge screens periodically show the legends during their glory days in sync with the performers on stage.

The show runs at a high energy level for over an hour and a half with no intermission. A powerhouse band, backup singers and dancers back the “legends.”

When “Prince” is singing “Purple Rain,” it is easy to let your imagination wander and believe that it is actually Prince.

The only living legend is “Taylor Swift,” who goes into the audience for selfies with young girls who react like they are actually having their picture taken with Swift, a part-time Rhode Islander.

While the young man portraying Michael Jackson is a bit larger than Jackson, he sounds just like him, shows his shyness while talking to the audience in his high-pitched voice, and has the moonwalk down pat.

The singer portraying Whitney Houston brought down the house with her emotional rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” She sounds exactly like Houston, especially on the high notes.

“Legends” saves the best for last, with the 1969 version of Elvis, the best Elvis impersonator I have ever heard. Great wig. Great voice. Great moves. His “Blue Christmas” brought back some good memories.

Since it is the Christmas season, the show incorporates a few holiday songs, costumes and even two huge Christmas trees.

There is no printed program and the actors are introduced during a loud finale where most of the audience couldn’t hear them. Give the hard working and talented performers some recognition, folks!

The fun show runs through New Year’s Eve. Tickets are $35 and $45, a bargain for this quality entertainment. Parking is free, and the slots are only a few steps away.
