Epic opens at Artists’ Exchange with R-rated play

Epic Theatre’s first play at Artists’ Exchange’s Theatre 82 is a very black comedy that pushes the envelope when it comes to profanity and political correctness.

Martin McDonagh’s “A Behanding in Spokane,” directed by Rob Roy, tells the tale of Carmichael (Dave Pizzelli), a scary creature who has spent the last 27 years of his life searching for his severed hand.

Marilyn and Toby (Emily Frattarelli and Kevin O. Peterson) are a pair of con artists who try to sell him a hand they say is his but obviously is not.

This all plays out in a seedy motel with a sadistic receptionist who muddies the waters as the scene becomes tense and violent.

There is a message to all this, but it comes by way of some R-rated language. If McDonagh’s script had left out all of the offensive language, it would be about 10 minutes long. Instead, we have an hour and a half, one-act play that has a few funny moments and more than necessary profane moments.

No one is spared, as the author takes on minorities, homosexuals, the handicapped, little old ladies, Mass murderers, and society in general.

If you are not offended by all of this (the younger folks in the audience opening night laughed hysterically), go see “A Behanding in Spokane.” It runs from Sept. 19 to 28 at 8 p.m.

The theatre is at 82 Rolfe St. Check out the nice pastries and drinks in the café, which may be taken into the theatre.

Tickets are $15, $12 for students. For reservations, call 490-9475.

Epic has a full program planned for the year at Artists’ Exchange’s two locations, most of them more in the PG-13 range.
