Evelyn's: Expensive but great seafood

My brother-in-law had seen Tiverton’s Evelyn’s Drive-In on the “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” TV program and just had to check it out, so on our way back from Newport we drove past our favorite seafood restaurant, Anthony’s, to satisfy his curiosity.

What we discovered was a quaint, old seafood shack with a busy take-out window, an old wooden pavilion that looked like it was about to fall down, a tiny inside dining room, and a gorgeous outside patio overlooking the water. We were lucky enough to get the last available table as the crowd grew. We quickly received our menus and were directed to the board listing “market prices,” which were mostly for clams, scallops and fish.

We were told that Evelyn’s clams and scallops were out of this world…and so were their prices. We shared a calamari appetizer, which was served piping hot and tender with hot peppers ($10.98). Bob was determined to order the clam/scallop plate ($32.98), although he really wanted the fisherman’s platter at nearly twice that amount. Cherry settled for the small sea scallop plate at $26. Following the “I drive, you share” rule, I declared my one scallop outstanding. Having had a bad reaction the last time I had fried clams, I restrained from tasting one, but was assured that they were also outstanding.

Joyce ordered the small shrimp plate at $15.98. Like the other shellfish, they were cooked to perfection but more than we’re used to paying, even in fine restaurants. I had the bargain: two crab cakes with a horseradish sauce and the usual French fries and cole slaw ($12.99).

Oddly, Evelyn’s is known for their $9.99 meatloaf plate and chow mein ($6.99, plus $2.99 for added beef or chicken). You can splurge and get it with lobster at market price.

We saw many orders of fish and chips leaving the kitchen, priced that day at $13…more than we are accustomed to pay, but the order was large and very popular. The folks at the table next to us said they eat there every Friday and often have the fish and chips.

The only disappointment was Bob’s fish chowder, which lacked any seasoning and was a bit blah ($4).

As if they didn’t have enough to eat, my in-laws splurged on chocolate brownie Sundays ($6.59), while I had a scrumptious warm grape nut pudding with whipped cream ($3.98). Joyce had an extra spoon.

I suppose the locals and tourists can afford to eat at Evelyn’s. We are glad we checked it out and understand why a TV show would be impressed. If you don’t mind paying a bit more, you should check it out. Service and atmosphere is great, located at 2335 Main Rd. in Tiverton. Phone number is 624-3100.
