Ex-Hawk Buco earns postseason accolades

The decision made by Hendricken product Stephen Buco to leave UMass-Lowell and transfer to UMass-Boston in a quest for increased playing time has paid off handsomely, leading to new on-ice opportunities for the former Hawk.

Buco led all of Division III in assists this past season, notching 32 helpers for the Beacons, while his 16 goals – five of which were game-winners – paced all UMass-Boston scorers.

For his efforts, Buco received end-of-season recognition from several sources, including being named First-Team All-America by the American Hockey Coaches Association.

Additionally, the senior center was also tabbed as one of five finalists for the Joe Concannon Award, handed out annually to the top American college hockey player playing outside of Division I.

Buco’s collegiate career concluded in late February when UMass-Boston was eliminated by Babson in the ECAC East semifinals, but the next chapter of his hockey career was about to begin.

The Elmira Jackals of the ECHL signed Buco to an amateur tryout contract, and he saw action in the Buffalo Sabres affiliate’s March 13 game versus the Reading Royals.

Although Buco had one shot on goal in the Jackals’ 4-3 overtime win, it wasn’t enough to merit a more permanent stay in upstate New York; he was released from his tryout agreement on March 16.
