Mayors across the United States are recognizing a growing movement that is dedicated to encouraging individuals and organizations to “go the extra mile” in service and volunteerism. On Nov. 1, over 440 mayors will declare “Extra Mile Day.”

Warwick and Mayor Scott Avedisian join the list. In fact, the city was one of 23 across the country to join in the inaugural Extra Mile Day.

“Several times throughout the year we applaud the efforts of volunteers that make a difference in the lives of our residents. From the mentors in our schools to the volunteers at Kent Hospital, their efforts go a long way in strengthening the quality of life that our residents enjoy. From the people who staff soup kitchens to those involved in youth sports and scouting, all efforts help promote a closer, more tight knit community,” Avedisian said in a statement.

At a time when many are demanding changes in service and opportunity, Extra Mile Day celebrates individuals and organizations that have chosen to create positive change in their communities by going the extra mile. Created in 2009 with 23 cities making the inaugural declaration, Extra Mile Day has continued to build momentum each year since.

“We all talk about wanting change ... happiness ... more opportunity,” Extra Mile Day founder Shawn Anderson said in a release. “However, relying on others to make that happen is only wishing for life to get better. Taking personal responsibility and going the extra mile personally is where true change is created.”

“It’s easy to complain about everything we see going on around us,” Anderson said. “The ‘go the extra mile’ message, though, gives people an alternative to just throwing their arms in the air and saying, ‘I give up.’ Extra Mile Day is a small reminder of the power we each have to create positive change at any time on any day.”

“Going the extra mile happens every day in this city and this proclamation is just a small token of gratitude to the people who make a difference,” Avedisian said.
