(Documentary about dangers of processed food)

We can some up “Fed Up’s” message in one word: sugar.

The food industry, according to writer/director Stephanie Soechtig, is responsible for duping the public by putting too much sugar in processed food and carefully hiding the dangers caused...mainly obesity.

She claims that we are sidetracked by the manta of people like Michele Obama, who claim that diet and exercise are the cure, and that calories in/calories out will keep us healthy.

Soechtig spends too much time telling us about the problem and not enough talking about solutions. And the solutions are very simple: Eat real food and avoid all packaged food.

She’s right of course, but for most of us that is just too difficult and often too expensive to do in our busy lives.

The facts are scary. Sugar, which includes corn syrup and a number of sugary words we don’t understand on the label, is consumed in dangerous rates. School lunch programs are controlled by fast food companies and soda manufacturers. Food labels don’t give proper proportions.

It’s a scary movie – scarier than “Godzilla.” The facts are there. We should pay attention to them. If only it were that easy.

Katie Couric narrates this hour and 40-minute documentary that will open a lot of eyes. How many of us will change our eating habits is the real question.

Rated PG.
