(Slick but uneven

caper flick)

Caper flicks can be lots of fun as we watch con artists plot their crimes and carry them out.

“Focus,” unfortunately, lacks focus, jumping all over the place, while occasionally providing some laughs, thrills and surprises.

Will Smith stars as Nicky, a slick con artist who heads a gang of thieves who are quite proficient in the con game. He meets and takes on as an intern the beautiful Jess (Margot Robbie), who gradually moves her way up to the BIG CON.

Nicky finds himself having feelings for Jess, a no-no in the business, gives her a big cut of the winnings and cuts her free, leaving her devastated.

They meet again in Buenos Aires (a coincidence?) where an intricate and convoluted con game goes bad, leading to a twist ending that you may figure out.

The movie begins with a primer on how to rob people of their watches (Do people wear watches anymore?) and wallets, which is clever and should serve as a warning to those who get caught up in crowds.

There’s a funny and tense scene at a Super Dome football game that is as clever as it is outrageous, relying on many twists and turns.

If you like these types of movies and don’t take them too seriously, you’ll enjoy “Focus.” It will at least make you keep your wallet in a safe place and not bet on a sure thing.

Rated R, with profanity and a little sex and violence.
