Face to face with the mayors

Three mayors encountered lots of inquisitive young minds yesterday as they visited St. Kevin School in observance of Catholic School Week.

The students wanted to know who had inspired them to choose a career in public office, and in the case of Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian what an expansion of Green Airport would mean for the city. Avedisian gave an overview of the city’s initial concerns with airport expansion plans and how, after many years and meetings, the Rhode Island Airport Corporation and the city reached an agreement that he feels works for both the airport and the residents of Warwick.

North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi entertained the students of teachers Maryann McKenney and Erika Shults reading stories, with Johnston’s Mayor Joseph Polisena telling of the twists and turns in his career from teacher to nurse, state senator and now mayor.

The mayors also got a briefing from Father Robert Marciano and school Principal Roger Parent. The two talked of growing enrollment at the school – now 202 – and mounting interest in the educational opportunity/alternative schools provided by St. Kevin and Catholic schools.

And whether any of the mayors inspired students to think of politics as a career, well, time will tell. Or, you might guess from their expressions.

And therein lies one of the biggest problem confronting our society: "...politics as a career..." Two things our otherwise brilliant Founders could never have envisioned: multi-generational government dependency, and "politics as a career".
