Fellini dazzles Pawtuxet

Rumors started circulating this spring about Fellini Pizzeria coming to Pawtuxet Village. It’s going to open in April. Then it was June. Then July.

Questions arose. How will it fit in that tiny space next to Water’s Edge and L’Attitude? Where will people park?

Neighbors watched the slow progress, peeking in the windows and watching the facelift on the façade.

And then on Thursday, August 14, without as much as an ad, flyer or sign, Fellini Pizzeria opened its doors and people magically poured in. Many staff members from the popular Wickendon Street location were there to land a hand to the “quiet opening.”

We arrived at 5:50 p.m. to find a 20-minute wait, with a bigger line forming behind us. We knew the pizza was great because we had been to the Fox Point location.

The small parking area was filled and people were walking from the Warwick side of the Pawtuxet Bridge and up Broad St. to Rhodes.

Word of mouth is alive and well in Pawtuxet Village, and many neighbors could be spotted in the deceivingly large space, with tables scattered in three rooms, including a large bar area.

A large jug of citrus-filled water stood at the entrance for the folks waiting inside and outside.

Our name was called and we were seated by the open window, where flowers in old steel film cases covered the windowsill.

We were amazed at how big the area was and even more amazed at how many people were ordering pizza to eat in and take out.

Fellini is famous for their specialty pizzas, which are cooked on a New York thin, whole wheat style crust with a special blend of cheeses. This is not your chain store pizza, folks, and really unlike anything you’ll find in Rhode Island.

House specialty pizzas go for $22.95 and $23.50 and are large enough for two big appetites. They range from a pesto pizza, with pesto sauce and plum tomatoes, to The Kitchen Sink, with penne pasta, feta cheese, scallions, roasted red peppers, topped with pepperoni and parmesan peppercorn sauce. Whole pies with cheese and tomato sauce are $16.50, with charges for additional toppings.

You can view a variety of specialty pizzas in the take-out area. A large cheese pizza slice is $2.50. Specialty pizza slices are $3.60. Whether eating in house or taking out, the best deal is ordering four different slices at $3.60 per slice.

We enjoyed the Chicken Pesto-baked chicken and pesto sauce; The Villager, seasoned arugula, goat cheese, caramelized onion and craisons, topped with a balsamic glaze; and The Borden, crispy bacon strips, sweet onions and gorgonzola cheese, drizzled with a creamy parmesan sauce. (We ordered two slices of our favorite).

You can create your own pizza from nearly three dozen fresh toppings, ranging from a variety of meats, cheeses and veggies to pineapple and jalapeno peppers.

Fellini also offers a wide variety of signature sandwiches on either focaccia bread or Italian roll, plus appetizers and salads. Desserts include tiramisu and baklava. The bar selection is impressive, with a number of beers on tap.

Fellini offers free delivery and take-out, which might be wise during their peak dinner hour. They are located at 2190 Broad St. in Pawtuxet Village. Phone number is 467-5992.
