Figure Skaters make some great flurries

There were snowflakes and snow flurries in and outside Thayer Memorial Arena Saturday as the Warwick Figure Skaters staged their 43 annual show before audience numbering more than 400 in the early afternoon and again that evening.

The Snowflakes, a pre-juvenile team, performed Flash Dance. Members of the Snowflurries, performed in a number of routines.

With about 260 members, the Warwick Figure Skaters have been a driving force in developing synchronized skating teams and in hosting regional and even national events in Rhode Island. The club hosted the US Championships in February, bringing teams from across the country to compete at the Dunk in Providence. The club’s adult team, the Ocean Blades, qualified and competed, an achievement Mayor Scott Avedisian noted in remarks opening the Saturday afternoon show.

As coach Julie Hayes pointed out in comments before the show started, figure skating is a significant commitment requiring eight to ten hours of practice weekly. While the annual show marks the end of the winter season, it’s hardly the end for those intent on perfection.

The spring season opens this week with skating throughout the summer. Practice is held in the Warburton Rink adjoining Thayer.

The theme of this year’s show, a Red Carpet Affair, “has given our dedicated and creative coaches an excellent medium to show off the talents of our committed and hard working skaters,” club president Beth Flanders says in the program book.
