FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Members of the Johnston Firefighters Local 1950 IAFF, AFL-CIO gather around the 2014 Harley Davidson Fat Boy Motorcycle they’re raffling off.

A line on a colorful promotional poster reads: “Net proceeds benefit the Johnston Firefighters Local 1950 Charitable Fund Programs.”

To date, Local 1950 has helped a total of 36 Rhode Island-based charities, most of which are based in Johnston, according to vice president Jonathan V. Pistacchio.

Just this past Christmas season, in fact, Local 1950 teamed up with Pete Matteo at Bar 101 and held a toy drive that produced record-setting donations of over 1,000 different items for the Toys for Tots Drive.

This time around, the IAFF, AFL-CIO brotherhood from Local 1950 has its sights set on an even much larger goal, and is raffling off a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Just last Friday morning, with the sun sparkling outside Johnston fire headquarters on Atwood Avenue, many members of Local 1950 – headed by president Keith Calci, Pistacchio and raffle co-chairmen Ryan Elmasian and Pat Brockway – greeted a representative from Precision Harley Davidson, who showed firefighters the actual motorcycle that will go to the winner of this year’s raffle.

“It’s a brand new 2014 Harley Davidson Fat Boy model,” Elmasian said of the shiny black motorcycle that drew rave reviews from the entire membership as well as Fire Chief Tim McLaughlin. “The nice thing is that only 300 tickets will be sold.”

Elmasian and Brockway announced that tickets are now on sale for $100.

The Harley Davidson Fat Boy is valued at $18,500, and Local 1950 purchased the bike from Precision Harley Davidson (724-0010) located at 269 Armistice Boulevard in Pawtucket. All net proceeds from the raffle will be used to support its many designated charities.

Elmasian said there are specific rules for the raffle, and by “purchasing a raffle ticket, the purchaser and/or the person named on the raffle ticket agrees to be bound by these rules and regulations” that are all included on the firefighters’ website, www.local1950.com.

The winner will be selected at a random drawing at approximately 8 p.m. on June 8 at Whiskey Republic, 515 South Water St. in Providence.

Elmasian said entrants do not need to be present to win, and “we’ll notify the winner by phone according to the contact information provided Local 1950 at the time of entry.”

In the event a winner cannot be contacted, fails to respond within 48 hours, fails to otherwise quality for the prize and/or declines the prize, an alternate winner will be selected at random.

Tickets can be purchased from any Johnston firefighter and by calling 751-3510.
