Firefighters rescue man from capsized canoe

Friday’s stormy weather continued into Saturday morning, sending one East Providence man overboard. The man was fishing in a canoe out of Bullocks Point in East Providence when a wave capsized his boat.

The Warwick Fire Department responded to a call after he was spotted in the water near Conimicut Point Beach around 7:15 a.m.

The fire department rescued the man within five minutes of receiving the call, according to Bruce Cooley, assistant fire chief. Cooley said the man suffered no injuries and appeared completely unharmed.

“With the weather and the water conditions, he got into some trouble,” Cooley said. “But we were able to respond rather quickly, which was fortunate for him.”

The man had been in the water for about 45 minutes before being seen and rescued, according to the report issued by Lt. Thomas Brady of the fire department.

After determining he was uninjured, the man and his boat were returned to Bullocks Point.

The Fire Department refused to release the man’s name.
