First-place Rams too much for Hawks

The La Salle Academy Rams stayed undefeated after they pummeled the Hendricken Hawks 21-2 on Thursday evening at Hendricken.

“It was a really bad day today,” Hendricken head coach Kevin Murray said. “They’re a good team. Their faceoff guys were dominant today. They got good players and that’s why they’re in first place right now.”

Ryan Williams was in net for the Hawks, while Nick DiMuccio was the goalie for the Rams. Williams ended the day with six saves and DiMuccio had seven.

For La Salle, Drew Edwards had four goals. Dylan O’Donnell had three goals and three assists. Owen Smith and Evan McGreen pitched in three goals, while captain Matt Manown had five assists.

Seniors Joe Sousa and Wyatt Alberigo each had a goal for Hendricken.

Junior Connor Severino won the opening faceoff for La Salle. From behind the net, O’Donnell passed in front to Manown, who took a shot, but it was snagged by Williams. The Hawks went into the La Salle zone, but a shot from Reilly Miller fell short of the net. Hendricken attackers Griffin O’Farrell and Sousa had a couple more shots on net, but DiMuccio was able to stop both.

With 7:16 remaining in the first, Hendricken was headed for an attack when Alberigo at midfield passed to Miller.

However, La Salle’s Manown had other plans. Manown stole the rock and took it into the Hendricken zone before leaving it for O’Donnell, who found the back of the net, giving La Salle a 1-0 lead.

After the Hawks’ Dylan McSparren had a shot stopped in front by the La Salle netminder, Manown passed to Logan Liljeberg for a goal and a 2-0 edge with 5:09 remaining in the first. Shortly after, Manown found attacker Owen Smith in front to go up 3-0.

Hawks’ junior defenseman Cam Duprey came up with a big block on Drew Edwards to prevent any more damage for the quarter. Then, Sousa charged the net and scored the first goal for Hendricken, pulling it within 3-1 with 1:42 remaining in the first.

Williams came up with stops on La Salle’s Mike Dignan and Edwards to end the quarter.

To open the second period, Manown missed one off the crossbar before the Hendricken goalie was able to deny a shot from McGreen. However, shortly after, O’Donnell fed McGreen, who shot a rifle past Williams for a 4-1 edge with 11:03 left in the half. After a Hendricken turnover, Smith took advantage and put one in the back of the net, putting La Salle up 5-1. Less than a minute later, O’Donnell scored with a turnaround shot to go up 6-1.

Next, La Salle’s Severino won the faceoff and went on a fast break to go up 7-1 with 8:25 remaining in the half.

The goals kept on coming for La Salle. First, Manown dished to McGreen, who put one past Williams for an 8-1 lead with 7:14 left to play. Next, Will Messner passed to the captain Dignan, who flung one in from deep to go up 9-1. Then, Edwards extended the lead to 10-1 with 5:31 remaining.

Alberigo made a turnaround shot with 3:06 left in the first half to pull the Hawks within 10-2.

A few minutes later, Manown assisted to O’Donnell in front for a goal and an 11-2 La Salle lead with 2:26 remaining in the second quarter. Less than a minute later, Messner charged the net and scored for La Salle, upping the lead to 12-2. With 17 seconds remaining in the half, Ethan Robson extended the lead to 13-2 and that would be the score at the break.

Dom Caniglia replaced Williams in net to start the second half for Hendricken.

The half started with the Hawks on the attack. First, Miller came up short on a shot and then Sousa had a shot snubbed by DiMuccio.

Soon after, La Salle defenseman Dan Ennis came up with a steal and set up Edwards for a goal to extend the lead to 14-2 with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter. Next, Smith assisted to Messner for a goal with 9:02 left in the period, making it 15-2. Then, after La Salle’s Severino won the faceoff, O’Donnell dished to Edwards, who sniped it into the net for a 16-2 lead.

With 6:36 left in the third, McGreen scored on passes from O’Donnell and Dignan to put La Salle up 17-2. A minute later, Edwards scored on an assist from Liljeberg, making it 18-2.

Then, Hendricken’s Miller and Alberigo had shots stopped by DiMuccio. With 2:35 remaining in the third period, Manown assisted to Dignan for a goal to put La Salle on top, 19-2. Then, with 1:15 remaining in the third, Smith scored on an assist from McGreen to go up, 20-2. Then, Hendricken’s Miller passed to Alberigo for a shot, but it was snubbed by DiMuccio.

Sophomore Rahon Mahoney came in net to start the fourth quarter for La Salle.

Charles White started the quarter with a pass to Brett Dolan, but his shot came up short for La Salle. Next, it was the Hawks’ turn, but a shot from Miller went wide left, followed by a shot from Alberigo that fell short. With 3:45 left, La Salle’s Brett Dolan put his team up 21-2 to close the scoring.

“We pretty much got it taken to us in every aspect today,” Murray said. “Get back to practice and try to figure it out. We’re going to keep plugging and see how it turns out.”

Hendricken falls to 5-2, while La Salle improves to 7-0 midway through the season.
