Fishing for Ideas

The “Rocky Point lobsta” gives fishing a try.

Dave Monti of the Saltwater Anglers and whose column, “No Fluke,” appears weekly in the Beacon, instructs Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit on how to cast. On her first cast, Coit reeled in a plastic whale. Other items included a plate and fork, baseball bat, shoe and goggles. The items were designed to trigger thoughts on possible park uses from an aquarium, restaurant, and playing fields to hiking trails and swimming.

SURPRISE CATCH: Even Channel 10 cameraman Joseph Gurzenda got into the act. Appropriately, he fished a point-and-shot camera out of the bay.

Members of the Saltwater Anglers Association and the Rocky Point Foundation found plenty of takers as they offered people the opportunity to reel in items tethered to floating bottles offshore from Rocky Point Saturday. The event was staged to publicize tonight’s public hearing starting at 6 at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet to solicit ideas on how the 82 acres recently acquired by the state should be developed.
