Five Lady Knights earn All-Region honors

Posted

Though the CCRI Lady Knights’ season ended before they would have liked, they did receive some good news this week with five of their players be named to the All-Region XXI team.  The Lady Knights receiving honors were sophomore captain Alex Place (East Greenwich), sophomore Sarah Deal (North Kingstown), sophomore Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich), sophomore Amber Boucher (Warwick), and freshman Taylor Butler (North Kingstown).

Place served as the Lady Knights’ leadoff hitter for her two years at CCRI. As a sophomore Place batted .397 with 29 hits, including six doubles and two triples, adding 12 RBI and 15 runs scored while leading CCRI by stealing 16 bases. For her career, Place ranks third on the CCRI career stolen base list.

Deal earned her second All-Region XXI honor,. As a sophomore Deal was a key part of the CCRI offensive attack, batting .328 with 20 hits including two doubles and a triple while adding eight RBI and 12 runs scored and three stolen bases.

Paiva served as the Lady Knights No. 1 pitcher. She was tied for the team lead with six victories and she also recorded 51 strikeouts in 70 innings pitched. She also did well at the plate, hitting .312 with 10 hits in 32 at-bats with eight runs scored and two stolen bases.

Boucher did a little bit of everything for the Lady Knights, playing second base, catcher and wherever else the team needed her. She batted .351 with 20 hits in 57 at-bats with three doubles and a triple while adding eight RBI and 10 runs scored.

Butler burst onto the scene for the Lady Knights in her freshman campaign. She served as a pitcher, outfielder and infielder. Butler led CCRI with 36 hits, including three doubles, while adding 13 RBI and 22 runs scored. She also swiped 11 stolen bases. In the circle, she led the Lady Knights with a 2.75 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched and was tied for the team lead with six victories.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the four ladies that were selected to the All Region XXI team,” said CCRI head coach Liz Afonso.  I will certainly miss Alex, Macayla, Sarah and Amber (next year. They have all made big contributions to the team’s success over the past two seasons and will be hard to replace.”

Four Knights named to All-Region team

Although the CCRI baseball team’s season came to an abrupt end two weeks ago, it received good news today. Sophomores Eddie Apice (North Kingstown), Ryan O’Dell (Lincoln), Jake Tillman (Scituate) and Jake Waldren (Phoenix, Ariz.) all received All-Region honors for their production on the field this season. Additionally, Apice earned the award for Defensive Player of the Year in the region.

Apice did a little bit of everything for the Knights this season. The Knights’ outfielder batted a team-high .388 at the plate to go along with 23 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, 25 RBI and an on-base percentage of .469. He drew recognition for his defensive play in the outfield as well, posting a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 and also adding four outfield assists. The lefty was also a mainstay in CCRI’s pitching rotation, posting a 2-2 record, with one of his wins coming in a complete-game shutout effort against UConn-Avery Point in game one of the Region Championship.

“Eddie Apice is a special player who should lead the team next season,” said CCRI head coach Ken Hopkins.

O’Dell was the team’s MVP this season, and for good reason. As the Knights’ starting shortstop, O’Dell batted .365 to go along with 29 runs scored, five doubles, one home run, 28 RBI, a team-high nine stolen bases and an on-base percentage of .409. He was also the ace of the Knights’ pitching staff, compiling a record of 3-1 while also adding two saves, a 2.25 ERA and a team-high 34 strikeouts in just 32 innings pitched. According to Hopkins, “Ryan O’Dell is the best athlete I have ever coached.”

Tillman was a standout in the outfield and on the mound for the Knights. The lefty ended the year with a .368 average, four doubles, three triples, three home runs, 16 RBI and an on-base percentage of .439. He was also one of the Knights’ top pitchers, posting a 3-1 record, and also added a team-high 33.2 innings pitched, eight walks and an ERA of 4.28.

“Jake Tillman was extremely versatile playing the outfield, first base, and winning some big games on the mound,” Hopkins said. “He had a fantastic offensive season as well and his bunts for hits were some of the best we have ever had.”

Waldren played solid second base all year, while also playing an equally impressive shortstop when O’Dell was pitching. Waldren scored a team-high 33 runs this year, to go along with a .351 average, one home run, 21 RBI, eight doubles and an on-base percentage of .429.

“Jake Waldren was a fantastic pick up who solidified second base and was one of the best middle infielders of my tenure at CCRI,” Hopkins said.

Chammat leads Knights at tennis national

The CCRI Knights co-ed tennis team was in Collin College in Plano, Texas for the Division III men’s tennis national tournament recently. Knights’ Co-Captain John Chammat (Cumberland) was the only CCRI player to stay alive in the championship draw, with all other Knight falling into the back draw.

Chammat, playing No. 1 singles, defeated Jon Robbins of Gloucester County College 6-4, 5-7 and 7-5 in the quarterfinals.  Chammat advanced to the national semifinal.

However, Chammat lost 6-1, 6-0 to the No. 1 seed Maclane Smoke of Brookdale Community College in the semis.

All of CCRI’s other players lost their initial matches and competed in the back draw. The No. 1 doubles team of Chammat and Sean Gorman (Wakefield) lost in the back flaw finals 9-8.

In No. 3 singles, Otniel Lopes lost in the back draw finals, and Eddie Papineau lost in the back draw finals at No. 4 singles.

Sarah Keomorokot lost in her back draw final as well.
