Flames of Hope still burning, 10 years on

The rain held off, and the damp and cold weather did not hinder attendance at the 10th anniversary of the Flames of Hope gathering hosted by the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation this past weekend in downtown Providence.

Events kicked off with a 2016 Gloria Gemma calendar unveiling at the State House and a daylong “Passport to Survivorship” series at the Renaissance Providence Hotel and the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. The series featured important resources and nationally known guest speakers, including Barbara Musser, Michael Samuelson and Geralyn Lucas.

Bands, dancing and shopping were among the attractions at the Celebration Village in Station Park, located across from the Providence Place Mall. Visitors had the opportunity to enjoy music and family fun, including a garden of hope, healing arts activities, shopping and a ticketed VIP Pink Party.

The popular “Breaking Boards for Breast Cancer” demonstration by Smithfield-based Mastery Martial Arts made its eighth consecutive appearance at the event, and the State House was lit up in pink as dancers from the Rhode Island Festival Ballet performed.

That led into the “Illuminations of Life” ceremony and torch procession, in which breast cancer survivors carried lit torches and walked to the WaterFire basin for a full lighting. A total of 150 torches were sponsored and carried. A fireworks show capped off the celebration on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation Race Series took off and offered a Kids Fun Run, Pink Pump Palooza and the signature 5K.
