Pats, Titans will look to get back on track

Only two of the three Warwick football teams will be in action this week, as undefeated Bishop Hendricken is on a bye after downing Cranston West, 56-13, to improve to 4-0 in Division I. However, Toll Gate and Pilgrim will take to the gridiron, with both hoping to find the win column after tough losses last Friday. Toll Gate (1-3) will host Tiverton (3-1) at Warwick Vets on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. after enduring a tough, one-score loss to Central Falls last Friday.

The Titans got two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Anthony Vann and one apiece from Michael Negri and Anthony Calise, but it wasn’t enough, as they couldn’t protect an 8-point halftime lead, ultimately losing by a touchdown, 35-28.

A costly turnover and a kickoff return for a touchdown plagued Toll Gate against the Warriors, and it won’t be able to make those kind of mistakes against a strong Tiverton team this week.

The Tigers have taken advantage of others teams’ miscues thus far, scoring 46 points against Scituate last week and 45 against Central Falls two weeks ago.

Toll Gate will, of course, have to continue its strong offensive play that it displayed last week, but the key will be the Titans’ defense and special teams play.

Ultimately, I believe that Tiverton is one of the stronger teams in D-III and will be a bit too much for Toll Gate to handle. It will be close, but the Tigers look like they can certainly contend in D-III this season.

Prediction: Tiverton 21, Toll Gate 7

After facing Westerly – one of the strongest teams in D-II – last week, the Pilgrim (1-2) football team has a more favorable matchup at winless Johnston (0-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Pats showed flashes of their potential on D-II opening night, coming back to beat Mount Pleasant before dropping games against East Greenwich and Westerly in their last two league contests.

Across the field, Johnston has struggled to foster an identity thus far, most recently dropping a winnable game against aforementioned Mount Pleasant.

Pilgrim has statistically been the better team this season, both offensively and defensively, and this is a game it can certainly win.

Starting running back Nate Ferri has had some injury troubles in recent weeks, but he saw some time last week, so hopefully he’ll be 100 percent for Saturday.

If he is, expect him to lead the offensive charge. If Ferri suffers any setback this week, the Pats will probably look to Simon Davis to carry the load out of the backfield, while also looking to quarterback James McKay to pick apart a defense that is allowing over 35 points per league contest.

Prediction: Pilgrim 28, Johnston 20
