For everything you need for an early spring picnic basket Sandwich Junction
Owner Kathy Ruginski, Vang "Jack" Thao, Chris Luiz, and Nancy Longiaru show off their scrumptious Blueberry Dream.

Springtime in New England. Sunshine, flowering trees, warmth. What better way to take in the picnic-y feeling of an early spring than with a basket of take-out (or dine-in!) sandwiches and salads from the best little sandwich joint in Warwick, the Sandwich Junction on Kilvert Street? This cozy joint has been serving up wholesome, fresh and homemade delectables for over 33 years, and is ready to kick off the season with its usual fare of daily specials and it all-time classic favorites. No worries if you are a soup lover - you will still find soups on the menu to ease you through those transition days, but it is the crispy salads and flavor-packed sandwiches that will have you coming back for more. Take a detour off the beaten track today and haul your cargo right to the Sandwich Junction for the perfect meal to satisfy your craving for spring.

You will find the Sandwich Junction nestled beside the train tracks in an historic building which used to be the Hillsgrove Post Office. Alex Longiaru first opened Sandwich Junction in 1977, and in 1990 his daughter Kathy and her husband Craig Ruginski took over, and so the family tradition continues. Their longtime, consistent preparation of homemade hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads, side dishes and daily specials has made them a popular destination for locals and newcomers alike - in fact, when you come, expect a line of devoted regulars who frequent the place for lunch every day.

Now that spring has arrived, the salads (including the traditional potato salad) and cold sandwiches are especially enticing. In the mood for comfort food? Try one of Sandwich Junction's "American Flyers" with turkey and cheese, just like your mom used to make. Or, if you are feeling a little more adventurous, try their Tutto Italiano, a power-packed combination of prosciutto, salami, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and vinaigrette. This season, Kathy and her faithful team are offering up a new item, a barbeque-beef Brisket sandwich of smoked barbeque with melted pepperjack cheese and a side of "dirty rice". Can you smell that familiar aroma of warmer days? It just doesn't get any better.

The only way to top off this delicious list of lunch favorites is to throw in a decadent homemade dessert, such as the popular "Blueberry Dream," a sweet combination of a shortbread crust, a filling of blueberry and crushed walnuts, all topped with smooth cream cheese frosting. Go ahead, indulge . . . you deserve it!

Come cozy up at the Sandwich Junction, located at 86 Kilvert Street in Warwick. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm. Cash only please. To place an advance order, call 738-0559. Closed weekends - sorry!
