Thanks to the Greater Warwick Lions Club, a bench bearing the name and photograph of Kevin Oliver, who died last September, was dedicated Tuesday evening at the Oakland Beach Commons. Oliver started the popular Tuesday night Oakland Beach Cruise Nights in 2001 with 11 cars that has blossomed into a seasonal event attracting hundreds of cars and raising funds to support Oakland Beach projects and scholarships. “He loved Oakland Beach,” City Council President Donna Travis said in remarks about Oliver. Mayor Scott Avedisian said Oliver not only cared for the Oakland Beach community but also those who have participated weekly in the cruise nights, ensuring that they be recognized. As it was a rainy night and at the end of the season, the Lions Club that now runs the event is planning on a rededication of the bench next spring. The club is also planning a “Trunk or Treat” for Oct. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the beach. The charge is $2 per car that will go to children’s charities. There will also be awards for the best decorated vehicles and best children’s costumes. Here, the Oliver family gathers at the bench following its unveiling.
