Former CCRI baseball catcher Tom Gavitt was drafted in the 19th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday by the Oakland Athletics, at pick No. 582 overall.

Gavitt had an outstanding senior season at Bryant University. The Bulldogs finished the year with an overall record of 42-16 and Gavitt was a main contributor. The North Stonington, Connecticut native concluded the season with a .320 average, to go along with six home runs and 29 RBI. For his efforts this season, Gavitt earned All-Northeast Conference Second Team and All-New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Second Team. Bryant was the first team in Northeast Conference history to record back-to-back 40-win seasons, as they earned NCAA Regional bids the last two years.

In Gavitt’s freshman year at CCRI, he hit .414 with six home runs en route to being named First Team All-Region. In his sophomore season with the Knights, Gavitt was named co-captain by his teammates and also earned MVP honors during the team’s magical run to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla. In that same season, Gavitt compiled an impressive .364 batting average while leading the Knights in three offensive categories with 51 hits, 17 doubles and 40 RBI.

Gavitt was also a tremendous student-athlete while at CCRI, accumulating an overall grade point average of 2.90. He was honored in 2012 as one of the athletes who represented CCRI at the Rhode Island Speaker of the House Scholar Athlete Awards.

“Extremely happy for him,” said CCRI head coach Ken Hopkins. “He is back in green again. He has worked hard and deserves everything he gets. Now he has to do it for a living. He is now living the dream. I told him to enjoy the journey and someday leave me a ticket when he plays at Fenway.”

Letterle helps CCRI to 11th at nationals

Cranston’s Steven Letterle and Chris Lussier helped lead the way as the Community College of Rhode Island golf team placed 11th at the NJCAA Division III national championship.

The  Knights shot their best team round on the final day of the Championship with a team total of 352, 14 strokes better than their first day score of 366, to give them a four-day total of 1,471. The 1,471 bumped them to 11th after they had been in 13th place for the first three days.

The Knights were led by Letterle, who shot a 78 on the final day for a four-day total of 316. He finished tied for 25th overall, the best finish for a CCRI golfer at the championship in recent history.

The performance at nationals also capped a strong postseason for Letterle, who was the medalist as CCRI won the Region XXI championship in May.

Letterle was followed at nationals by Gina Bartolotta, who shot an 88 for a four-day total of 355 to place her 72nd overall individually. Zach Sullivan shot his best round of the Championship with an 89 to give him a four-day total of 393 to place him 75th. Rounding out the Knights foursome was Cranston’s Lussier, who also shot his best round of the Championship with a 97 to give him a four-day total of 407 and placing him 76th.
