Friends group supports Mohr Library with used book sale

Posted

To say the Friends of Mohr Library enjoyed another success during last weekend’s used book sale would an understatement.

For almost the entire 15-hour event – held last Friday and Saturday inside the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library – adults and children ambled around the well-stocked tables and shelves looking over thousands of offerings.

“We’ve been busy during this book sale,” said Helen Antonizio, who serves as the Friends group’s president and shared co-hosting duties with long-time colleague Sheila Manney. “We were surprised with the number of people who were looking for an atlas.”

One of those folks was Janessa Bentley, who was overjoyed that she found an atlas that provided a myriad of information about Rhode Island roadways and maps.

“This is a great bargain,” Bentley said while sipping a coffee and putting several other books on the checkout desk. “I’m so happy we came to this sale. There’s lots and lots to choose from.”

Bentley’s friend David Merolla agreed as he handed Manney $2 for the books he selected after browsing through the Mohr Library basement, which was filled with everything for children’s books to special novels and beyond.

The event was a big hit with Kathleen Lester, who is originally from Pennsylvania and now lives in Johnston.

“I love books,” she said. “I have two boys and I want upgrade their reading level. When I read about this book sale, I thought it would be a great place to find books for the boys.”

For Verna Russillo, the sale was “just across the street” from where she lives, and was a huge hit. She purchased half a dozen hardcover books.

Although the Friends didn’t announce a fundraising tally, Antonizio offered: “This will certainly help us fund special programs that are not part of the library budget. They are programs like ‘Coloring for Grown-ups’ held on Monday nights and the Summer Reading Program.”
