Friends of Warwick Ponds will present Monitoring Water Quality in Warwick Pond and Warwick Pond's Yearly Fish Run Tuesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library. The event will feature presentations from Linda Green, Director of URI Watershed Watch and Phil Edwards, Diadromous Fish Project Leader and Fish Passage Coordinator at RIDEM.

Green’s presentation will include a look at the monitoring results and what they mean, and where Warwick Pond ranks compared to other Watershed Watch Lakes. Rhode Island may be The Ocean State but its inland landscape is dotted with lakes and ponds. The City of Warwick has sponsored volunteer water quality monitoring on Warwick Pond since 1995, and for nearly 30 years, volunteers in the URI Watershed Watch program have been monitoring lakes and ponds (as well as rivers, streams, estuaries and salt ponds). Green will also discuss the basics of lake monitoring and how this has translated to URI Watershed Watch lake and pond monitoring procedures.

Edwards’ presentation will provide an overview of Warwick Pond's anadromous fish run and focus on life history, run size, and monitoring programs. Anadromous river herring return to Warwick Pond to spawn each spring. Other topics will include river herring run size trends and habitat restoration projects throughout Rhode Island and provide a summary of the resident freshwater fish species that inhabit Warwick Pond.
