January 27 through Jan. 31 marks Catholic Schools Week, and Warwick’s Catholic schools are celebrating with a week full of dress-up days, special presentations, community service projects and other fun events.

St. Peter School will start the week with a Catholic Schools Week Mass, featuring special music and readings from the students. Following the mass will be an open house at the school from noon to 2 p.m.

St. Peter will then kick off its celebration with an Olympics-themed “Opening Ceremonies” Day on Monday; in honor of next month’s Winter Olympics, each class has selected a country and will be able to wear the colors from that country’s flag for the day.

Tuesday is Buddy Day where eighth graders will join their kindergarten “buddies” for a special activity. Wednesday is Grandparents Day, and Warwick author Elly McGuire will read her popular book “Schmitty The Weather Dog,” along with Schmitty himself, to the students in preschool through third grade. Thursday marks Student Appreciation Day; students will be allowed to dress down for the day and enjoy an afternoon of movies, a pep rally and participation in the Kiddie Olympics.

The week concludes with Teacher Appreciation Day; parents have volunteered to watch classes so teachers can enjoy a longer, special lunch. During the afternoon, all students will have the opportunity to participate in a Minute To Win It competition organized by the teachers, and in the evening, the sixth-graders are hosting a Game Show Night for students in grades four through eight.

In honor of Catholic Schools Week, St. Peter students will be bringing in household items to make baskets for shut-ins from the parish. Each classroom will make a basket.

St. Rose of Lima School will also host an Open House and New Student Registration for the 2014-2015 Academic Year on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The school will start their week with Monday’s Student Appreciation Day, during which students are welcome to dress down and will enjoy a night of no homework. On Tuesday, the students will add their own twist to their school clothes during Crazy Socks/Hat/Tie Day. Wednesday will mark Service Day; all students in the school will take time to make gifts for residents of area nursing homes. On Thursday, the students will give teachers, faculty and staff a break; eighth graders will spend part of the day teaching all of the other classes for an hour, while other students will be lucky enough to serve as principal, secretary and custodian for an hour. The week concludes with Friday’s school-wide Bingo game.

St. Kevin School will also start with a mass on Sunday, Jan. 26, featuring His Excellency Bishop Louis Gelineau, DD, Bishop Emeritus of Providence as Main Celebrant and homilist; the day will mark his 42nd anniversary of Ordination as Bishop. Immediately following the mass will be an open house at St. Kevin from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the school has been experiencing increased enrollment over the past few years, growing from 150 students in 2013 to 202 at the current time.

Throughout the week, St. Kevin students will be treated to a number of special guests to make presentations to different classes and spend time at the school, reflecting the theme of the week: Catholic Schools: Faith – Knowledge – Service.

Monday will be Women of Success Day. Special guests include Sister Mary Edwardibne Black, RSM and retired principal of Pawtucket’s St. Mary’s; Sister Evelyn Matarese, SND and 30-year member of the faculty of St. Kevin, now retired; the Honorable Haiganush Bedrosian, Chief Judge of Rhode Island Family Court; Kim Castiglioni, a mortgage executive; and Officer Mary Ellen Porella Jessop of the Warwick Police Department.

On Wednesday, North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi, Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena, and Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian will visit the school for Mayors Day.

St. Kevin will also have a special lunch for Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday, and for Student Appreciation Day on Friday, students will have an ice cream social and come to school with their craziest pair of socks and crazy ties.

Even the high school students are getting in on the fun. Bishop Hendricken will celebrate with a weeklong trivia contest during which the students will answer trivia questions about both the school’s history and the Catholic Church. After school on Thursday, the students will have the option to take part in a fun, after-school event featuring a rock-wall, inflatable structures and other games in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. A special mass will also be held on Friday in recognition of the celebration.
