Fun-A-Day art program comes to Warwick starting Thursday

Posted

The nationwide program Fun-A-Day will come to Warwick for the first time with a launch party Thursday, thanks to artists and organizers Patty Johnston Martucci and Lisa Padovano Kretchman.

Fun-A-Day is a non-profit, community art project that occurs in cities throughout the country every year. The goal is to do something creative every day for the month of January.

According to a press release from Martucci and Kretchman, artists register to participate in Fun-A-Day Warwick by choosing a project and making one piece of art every day throughout the month of January 2014, culminating in an art show and community party at the end of the month.

Artists 10 years of age or older can participate, and you do not need to be a resident of Warwick.

The project will kick off with the Launch Party on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Kraemer Building at 2905 Post Road in Warwick. Martucci and Kretchman will be on hand to talk about project ideas and answer any questions; guests are encouraged to bring light refreshments to share. Guests are asked to enter through the front door, but there is plenty of parking behind the building.

To register for Fun-A-Day, e-mail keepitsimple15@cox.net and you will be e-mailed back an application. There is no fee to participate; as long as you create the pieces and deliver them to the reception location, you may participate. Because of limited space at the final exhibit, Martucci and Kretchman ask that you give details as to the size of your pieces during registration.

In addition to creating pieces for the month, those participating in the exhibit are welcome to sell their artwork during the final show and keep 100 percent of the sale price.

Fun-A-Day was started in Philadelphia, and is now held in cities across the country, including Boston and Providence. Martucci and Padovano, who became friends while working at the Warwick Museum of Art, learned about the program when they participated in Fun-A-Day Providence.

“We decided we wanted to bring it to Warwick,” explained Martucci.

Martucci explained that Fun-A-Day is simply a movement, and members of local communities are welcome to “pick up the ball and run with it” if they wish to start their own local event.

In addition to Thursday’s Launch Party, a Progress Party will be held at the Warwick Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. The meeting will allow for discussion on projects, as well as more details on the Artist’s reception, publicity and more.

Finally, the Fun-A-Day Warwick Artist’s Reception will occur on Saturday, March 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library. Artists are asked to arrive promptly at noon to set up their art in the meeting space. Although artists are encouraged to complete their work during the month of January, having the show in March allows time for artists to add last minute details, have things framed, etc.
