GOP endorses Avedisian, Gabriele named interim committee chair

Posted

The Warwick Republican City Committee has unanimously endorsed Mayor Scott Avedisian for re-election. “The Warwick Republicans are happy to endorse the mayor for re-election. With the investment that the city is making into our infrastructure, we know that economic development possibilities are endless. With the focus on City Centre Warwick, Mayor Avedisian is positioning this city in a good place for the future,” reads a release.

Ward 9 resident Mark Gabriele, a former member of the Rhode Island Young Republicans and a member of the Warwick City Committee, has replaced Mike Penta as interim chairman.

“Mark has worked on state and local Republican levels for the past seven or eight years, and we are happy that he agreed to step in,” Penta said in a statement.

Penta stepped down as city committee chairman in order to run for the House of Representatives in District 21.

“We thank Mike Penta for his years of dedicated service, and thank Mark for his willingness to step in during a crucial election year,” Mayor Avedisian said.

Congratulations to Scott Avedisian for his endorsement, and I couldn't agree more that the City is taxing us enormously "with the investment that the City is making into our infrastructure, we know the that economic possibilities are endless."

However I am more focused on the "cost-to-the-taxpayer" than "possibilities". It is "possible" that City Centre might someday break even, or even start making a profit, especially if the trains start actually gaining some passengers, but as for now it is costing taxpayers a fortune, and for the foreseeable future, it will continue to cost the taxpayers a fortune.

I would like to debate Mayor Avedisian on this and other topics. I will debate him anywhere, anytime.

    Please let him know.

    Thank you.

    Hey Dick Corrente:

It's quite clear from your "campaign" of comments on this site that you really don't want a debate; you just want to attack the mayor -- and then ignore how easily your attacks are dismissed.

"The city is taxing us enormously," you say -- as if there's nothing good that comes of it. But by any objective measure, Warwick is on a better financial footing than any other community of its size.

And, by the way, Warwick is #11 for taxes in the state -- behind Providence, Pawtucket, Cranston, East Providence, Central Falls, and Woonsocket, which all have had severe financial crises over the past several years while Warwick hasn't.

So, those "enormous" taxes [which, relatively speaking, aren't] are paying to keep the city out of a financial hole -- and that's a bad thing?!

And just what is City Centre "costing the taxpayers?" If you're arguing that the lack of development means that the city isn't benefiting from development that could provide additional tax revenue, then just be honest and say so. This bumper-sticker rhetoric is really amateur.

Oh, and did you see where a candidate for Prime Minister in Britain pulled out of the race after suggesting that another candidate wouldn't be as qualified because she didn't have kids?

So, Dick, when are you going to back out of the race after your comments about Avedisian from a few weeks back?

    Mr. Crickee,

I am always amazed when people cite examples of worse behavior to justify examples of poor behavior. That logic can certainly be interjected with the behavior of the mayor of Warwick and with the tax policies that he has inflicted upon his residents. I use the word inflicted because much like a disease, this sickness needs treatment, and for a long period. I also find it amusing when people who have never been part of the process, spoken a word in public, attended a budget hearing, or stood up to make an argument, lament on how great things are "in comparison to (fill in the blank)".

The fact of the matter is that that Scott Avedisain has fiscally destroyed this city for generations for the sole purpose of personal enrichment and union favor. It is completely evident throughout the city everywhere you look. But keep those blinders on people, and pinch your nose as the smell of urban rot and decay is upon us.

All your comment shows, Thecaptain, is that you believe that disagreeing with the mayor somehow represents an actual political platform.

Those public meetings you've presumably attended have only served to narrow your perspective, so I don't really see the point in attacking other people who you assume haven't. I'll keep my wider view of the world, thank you.

You write: "It is completely evident throughout the city everywhere you look," yet it seems so evident to only you, who refuse to look beyond the end of your nose for fear that it might actually cast the mayor in a good light.

But by all means, continue to believe that you're somehow in the enlightened minority who knows so much more than the rest of us. You're bound to have as much success unseating Scott Avedisian as you have up until now.
