GOP endorses Avedisian, Hodgson

Posted

The Warwick Republican City Committee held a jam-packed meeting Wednesday at the campaign headquarters of Mayor Scott Avedisian. The committee members and guests heard from Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Ken Block, the two Republicans vying for the nomination for governor of Rhode Island.

Mayor Fung previously spoke to the committee, as did Mr. Block.

“As we wanted to have as many members of the City Committee meet and hear both Mayor Fung and Mr. Block, we asked them to come back for another session before the committee. I expect that the City Committee will reconvene early in June to make an endorsement,” Michael Penta, city GOP chair said in a statement.

The committee unanimously endorsed Mayor Scott Avedisian for re-election and supported Ward 1 Councilman Steven Colantuono for another term on the City Council. The actual endorsement for Colantuono will be made by the Ward 1 Republican Committee in June.

The committee also unanimously voted to endorse State Senator Dawson Hodgson who is running for Rhode Island Attorney General.

Avedisian served for nine years as a member of the Warwick City Council before being elected mayor of Warwick in 2000.  Colantuono is serving his third term as a member of the City Council. He defeated an incumbent Democrat to gain his seat on the council.

Senator Dawson Hodgson is serving his second term in the Rhode Island Senate. In his first term, he represented some constituents in the Potowomut section of Warwick. He now represents East Greenwich, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, and Narragansett.
