GOP hosting 38 Studios presentation

The Rhode Island Republican Party will hold a presentation on 38 Studios this evening at party headquarters on Post Road, followed by a Q&A session.

38 Studios was a gaming company owned by Curt Schilling, the previous Red Sox pitcher. Beginning the company in Massachusetts, 38 Studios moved to Providence after a bond deal in July of 2010.

Rhode Island’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) approved a $75 million loan guarantee with the gaming company. By the end of 2012, 38 Studios was supposed to bring 450 new jobs to the state.

Initially the company was exceeding job requirements when they first relocated to Providence.

They even released a video game, “Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning,” which was received well.

In May of 2012, 38 Studios began missing required loan payments. Employees were denied paychecks and it slowly came to light that Schilling’s company had gone bankrupt.

Later that year law enforcement agencies began investigating 38 Studios and everyone involved and a subsequent lawsuit was issued against Schilling and supporters of the company.

State Representative Michael Chippendale who is on both Oversight Committees on the issue has put together a slideshow presentation on the issue. The Rhode Island Republican Party reached out to him to make a presentation because he has been well versed in the issue.

“This presentation would be good for people who haven’t kept up with the issue and just know very little about it and want to be educated on the subject,” Chippendale said.

He believes the presentation is part of an overall messaging campaign by the Republican Party to educate the public and potential voters in the issues facing Rhode Island. It is important information that needs to be shared.

“Education is power,” Chippendale said. “The public deserves to be informed and should want to be. You should be informed on all state affairs, but especially with 38 Studios there is so much at stake and so much damage done towards the taxpayers. People should know what’s happening.”

Chippendale believes there will be a good crowd from the feedback he has heard about the event so far.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the party’s headquarters, 1800 Post Road, Suite 17-I.
