Galasso 'Treasures' in time for last minute giving

“People love memories. I take their memories and make them into art.”

Frank Galasso is known nationwide for his sports cartoons, but here in Rhode Island we also know him for his depiction of local places that brings Rhode Island and its history to the forefront.

For this Christmas season Galasso has released a new piece, “Ocean State Treasures.” It features some classic Rhode Island businesses such as Benny’s and Munroe’s Dairy. Quintessential Rhode Island fare is spotlighted with Del’s Lemonade, Narragansett Beer, Iggy’s Doughboys and many others. Each image also has a short paragraph with the history and significance of the item.

Galasso’s first cartoon appeared in the Pawtucket’s Evening Times in September of 1987. In the years following, his sports cartoons grew in popularity and he had his artwork in many of the syndicated newspapers around the country and Galasso’s work was regularly featured in the Providence Journal. He started creating and selling lithographs of Rhode Island landmarks and cities such as Rocky Point, McCoy Stadium and Warwick. He now sells his lithographs from his website as well as several retailers throughout the state.

Galasso said, “I have a retro style, an old newspaper style that I think people appreciate, but I’m not just an artist. I’m a journalist. I do my own research and my own writing for the pieces and that’s not typical. I think it’s the history I bring forward that people like.”

More than anything, Galasso believes people enjoy his work because of the memories they stir. He takes this into account and tries to find places that will remind people of the old days.

“I was born and raised here in Rhode Island, I know,” Galasso said. “Yes, you can buy Del’s today, but when you do, you still remember all the good times you went to Del’s as a kid, too.”

Ocean State Treasures is now on sale at Warwick Mall as well as on Galasso’s website, www.frankgalasso.com for $24.95.
