Garabedian to be honored for mall’s efforts to accommodate those with disabilities

Mayor Scott Avedisian and members of the mayor’s Advisory Commission on Disabilities will present a citation of recognition to Aram Garabedian, managing partner of the Warwick Mall, to recognize the special efforts made at the facility to accommodate those with disabilities tomorrow at 11 a.m. The presentation will be made as part of the annual Senior Living Expo, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event for seniors and caretakers features, among other things, entertainment, music, prizes and giveaways, health screenings and resources.

“We are very pleased to recognize Aram and his staff for their ongoing efforts to make the mall accessible and available for all residents to enjoy,” Avedisian said in a statement. “For many people, the mall is not just a place to shop, but a welcoming, attractive place to gather with friends for a meal or to enjoy the many special events the mall sponsors throughout the year.”

Residents who would like to nominate a business for consideration are asked to contact Pat Seltzer, RN, in the Department of Human Services at 468-4103.

The commission was established in April 1978 by former Mayor Joseph Walsh to address “barriers in our community that may affect mental and/or physical disabilities and to generate citizen awareness of those issues.” The purpose of the commission is to develop and maintain a comprehensive and coordinated information advisory network system in Warwick. The commission recommends priorities for action to the mayor.

Services include, but are not limited to, continuous assessment of barriers that may affect individuals with disabilities/special needs, planning and development of new programs, recommending priorities for legislative action and monitoring existing programs.

The commission is also looking for new members to serve. Anyone who would like to be considered should contact Seltzer as well.
