Gas prices up 11 cents from last week

Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are up 11 cents from last week, the first increase in six weeks according to AAA Northeast.

AAA’s April 20 survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.47 per gallon, up 11 cents from last week. Prices locally are seven cents higher than a month ago. The current price is a penny more than the national average for regular unleaded of $2.46. A year ago at this time Rhode Island’s average price was $1.17 higher at $3.64.

“Increases in the price of crude oil over the past week have driven this latest increase at the pump,” said Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast. “We also saw increases at this time last year, with the switch over to summer blends of gasoline and the added cost of refining those blends.”

The range in prices in the latest local AAA survey for unleaded regular is 34 cents, from a low of $2.35 to a high of $2.69. AAA advises motorists to shop around for the best prices in their area, and to make sure they and their passengers buckle up – every trip, every time.
