DaSilva introduces bill to keep DCYF children in-state
Rep. Roberto DaSilva (D-Dist. 63, East Providence, Pawtucket) has reintroduced a bill (2012-H 7135) that would require Rhode Island Family Court and the Department of Children, Youth and Families to allow state service providers the opportunity to develop an individual treatment plan for any child in need of service. No child would be sent to out-of-state residences, facilities or treatment centers without first allowing a Rhode Island provider the opportunity to develop a treatment plan to help that child.

Katies Law bills again introduced in Assembly

Legislation has been introduced in the General Assembly again this year to require that a DNA sample be collected from suspects arrested for any crime of violence. The bills (2012-H 7056, 2012-S 2061) are modeled after Katies Law, which has been enacted in 24 other states. Sponsors are Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy (D-Dist. 38, Hopkinton, Westerly) and Sen. David E. Bates (R-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol).

Bills set licensing procedures for practitioners providing autism treatment

Building on legislation enacted last year to provide insurance coverage for the treatment of autism, bills have been introduced this year to establish strict guidelines for the licensure of practitioners who provide or supervise autism treatments. The bills were introduced in the House (2012-H 7152, 2012-H 7165) by Rep. Peter G. Palumbo (D-Dist. 16, Cranston) and in the Senate (2012-S 2076, 2012-S 2128) by Sen. Edward J. ONeill (I-Dist. 17, Lincoln, North Providence, Pawtucket).

Bill would prohibit political contributions from vendors with state contracts

Rep. Michael M. Marcello (D-Dist. 41, Scituate, Cranston) has introduced legislation (2012-H 7093) to prohibit any vendor who has a contract with the state worth more than $5,000 or who has bid on a state contract worth more than $5,000 from making contributions to any political committees established to promote the candidacy of an officeholder responsible for awarding contracts or any declared candidates for that office.
