George Andrew Sakallaris, 94, of Garden City died peacefully on May 30, 2012 at the West Shore Health Center in Warwick, under the care of Odyssey Hospice of R.I. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Etta (McDermott) Sakallaris for more than 60 years.
He grew up in Portland, Maine, the son of Greek immigrant parents. With his siblings, the late James Lebares and the late Stella Kapiris, he help to run the family store until he left to attend the University of Alabama. After graduating in 1940, he went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II, and later to work as an engineer with the United States Department of Defense for 44 years. In his retirement, he was an active member of NARFE, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He found great joy in gardening, traveling, and most especially in time spent with his family.
He was a loving father to Andrew Sakallaris and his wife, Bonnie, Nora Cicione and her husband, Anthony; loving grandfather to Vanessa Carnevale Renehan, Paul Renehan Jr., Jessica Carnevale Forcier, Michael Forcier, Emily Cicione, Andrew Sakallaris, Elizabeth Hage Sakallaris, and Krista Sakallaris. Most recently he became a proud great-grandfather to his “Angels”, Lilly Etta Renehan and Dalton George Forcier.
His funeral will be held June 4 at 9 a.m. from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick followed by a service in the Church of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox, 175 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in the Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours Sunday 4-7 p.m.
