George W. Carlson Jr.
George W. Carlson Jr., 86, of North Kingstown, formerly of Warwick, passed away December 6, 2011 after becoming ill while visiting with his daughter. He was the beloved husband of 52 years of the late Claire E. (Spinney) Carlson.
He was born in Foster, the son of the late George W. and Ruth (Cole) Carlson. He was a graduate of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He and his wife were co-owners of Carlson’s Paint and Wallpaper in East Greenwich for 25 years. An avid golfer, he founded Carlson’s Golf League in Quonset.
He leaves five children, George Carlson III and his fiancée, Deb Wendeloski, of Cranston, Gary Carlson and his wife, Eleanor of Atlanta, Ga., Karen Taraska and her husband, Bruce, of Exeter, Cheryl Murphy and her husband, Kevin, of Summerville, S.C. and Dana Carlson of North Kingstown; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. He was the brother of Shirley Carlson of Exeter and the late Claire Dube.
A graveside memorial service will be held Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. at Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
