George Washington returns to RI this Saturday after 225 years

Posted

President George Washington’s last visit to Rhode Island took place 225 years ago. He came here to recognize the fact that Rhode Island had finally ratified the U.S. Constitution – the last of the original colonies to do so – and was now, officially, the 13th state.

This Saturday Mount Vernon’s official historical portrayer of Washington, the world-renowned Dean Malissa will join the Rhode Island Historical Society to present Washington Returns to Providence. The event takes place Aug. 15 at the John Brown House, 52 Power St. Doors open at 10 a.m. and Washington arrives at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

The afternoon will include a grand toast to the first commander-in-chief, a walking tour that will retrace Washington’s steps during his stay, family-friendly activity booths, living history interpreters re-enacting 1790 festivities, photo opportunities and refreshments authentic to the period, all taking place on and around the grounds of the John Brown House Museum on College Hill.

Washington Returns to Providence will bring together educators, community leaders, students, stakeholders and tourists for a special event marking a major moment in Rhode Island history. In celebrating the anniversary of Washington’s final visit to our state, the RIHS will also celebrate civic engagement and citizenship. When Washington was last here, our nation was new. Today, with new leadership guiding a reinvigorated Rhode Island, Washington Returns to Providence is a timely and exciting occasion to rediscover the earliest days of American democracy as we take on 21st century challenges together.

Washington Returns to Providence is presented by the Washington Trust and is made possible by the vice regent of Rhode Island to Mount Vernon. Learn more at WashingtoninProvidence.com.
