Athlete of the Year - Madison Balutowski, Pilgrim

Madison Balutowski was the definition of “clutch” for the Warwick Co-op girls’ ice hockey team this year, most notably in the postseason.

Playing for a state championship against Mount St. Charles while facing elimination in the DeCosta Division, the Titans found themselves down in the third period of game two.

Balutowski then delivered the game-tying score and later the series-evening score to force a decisive game three, but she didn’t stop there.

It was her wrist shot that went clean past the glove of Mount goaltender Taylor Dill to secure the title for Warwick.

“[In]16 years coaching, five with girls, [she is] one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever seen,” Warwick head coach Dave Tibbetts said. “[She] has the kind of drive you wish every athlete ever had. When the game’s on the line she comes up big.”

And the two-time First Team All-State selection is just a junior. Balutowski made Titans’ history this past season when she became the first player to eclipse the 100-point mark in just three seasons. With 58 goals in the past two seasons, she doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, either.

She told the Beacon back in late March, after capturing her second straight title, that she came in to high school just wanting one championship. Now that she has two, she wants a third. With her skills and ferocity, a three-peat isn’t out of the question.
