Glen Hills fifth-graders go back in time for Colonial Day

Posted

The students in Danielle DeSimone and Lori Tedeschi’s fifth-grade classes finished off the school year with a culminating activity to compliment their research of important figures from colonial times.

Each student was given an important figure from the colonial era to research over the course of a month. An in-depth essay, including a complete bibliography in MLA format, was presented by each student to the class at the conclusion of the research. A tri-fold display board accompanied the oral presentation, showing a representation of person, created for a fictional toy company. The essay, both persuasive and informative in nature, was designed to “sell” the figure to the fictional toy company.

Colonial Day, the final piece in the research project and presentation, was put on by the students for their peers, families and guests. Each student dressed as their important figure and was prepared to share any information they’d learned in their research.
