Going out with a bang, Aldrich, Gorton hold carnivals

With the school year completed Aldrich and Gorton Junior Highs have officially closed their doors. Both though made sure to go out with a bang, hosting carnivals for the entire student body in the final days of the schools.

Aldrich held their carnival Friday, June 17th, and Gorton held theirs on Monday, June 20th. Both schools featured inflatable obstacle courses and games, movie viewings as well as different treats such as Del’s Lemonade and Kona Ice shaved ice treats, with a cookout for lunch. Both schools had beautiful days without a cloud in the sky for their respective last hurrahs.

Aldrich Principal John Livsey said the school wanted to end the year on a “positive note.” The school had been planning the event for the last four months and spent $5,825 on the field day.

Livsey explained that as a Feinstein school, Aldrich had received nearly $20,000 thanks to Alan Shawn Feinstein, and with the school closing those funds became available. The remainder of the funds will follow the students to the Vets Junior High.

“We wanted to go out with a bang,” Livsey said. “These students are just loving today. They have done nothing but run around all day. The faculty was really supportive and they are all having a blast today.”

Aldrich also had kickball and football games going as well as a dunk tank where students paid to dunk teachers. The dunk tank raised more than $300, which will all be donated to the House of Hope CDC.

Livsey said in the past “teams” within the two grades celebrate the end of school separately and the field day was one of the few times the classes are altogether.

“They can have this one celebration as a while school before going their separate ways,” Livsey said.

Gorton Principal Jeff Taylor, said, “This will leave all of our kids with a good memory they can take with them no matter what school they are going to.”

The Gorton field day included a demonstration from Warwick Police Deaprtment’s K-9 Unit. Altogether the event cost approximately $3,000 and funded similarly to Aldrich’s with funds from Alan Shawn Feinstein for being a Feinstein School as well as support from the PTO.

“It has been smiles all day,” Taylor said. “We wanted a final farewell to Gorton that would send students off on a positive note and would be a fun opportunity for everyone and we are having a blast.”
