Three top films from the Golden Age of Horror, plus a short talk about each, will be held at Warwick Public Library on Thursdays, October 9, 16 and 23 at 7 p.m.

Modern horror villains are like schoolboys compared to golden age baddies. Today’s boogeymen are nothing more than killers. The first evildoers were much worse.

“Island of Lost Souls” (1932), starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi will be shown Oct. 9. Dr. Moreau creates beast-men from animals and tries to breed them with humans.

“The Black Cat” (1934), starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, will be shown on Oct. 16. In the film, satanic priest Hjalmar Poelzig battles his old foe Dr. Vitus Werdegast for the soul of a beautiful newlywed.

“The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, will be featured on Oct. 23. Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Pretorius team up to build a mate for a reanimated corpse.

In their time, these films were seen as a threat to morality. Today, they’re still chilling and great fun to watch. Librarian Wil Gregersen will lead the discussion.
