As they have done for the past 17 years, graduates of Gorton High School gathered for a two-day reunion over the weekend. This was the big year for the Class of 1954. They took a tour of the school on Saturday with Principal Jeff Taylor leading the way. The school also had coffee and refreshments for the graduates who said they were in awe of the school’s good condition. After the school tour, graduates from 1941 to 1955 joined at the K of C Hall on Sandy Lane for cocktails. Yearbooks from the school were a hit. On Sunday there was a luncheon at the Radisson. Dot McGuinn, the driving force of the annual reunion and monthly luncheons of Gorton grads, said the number of attendees is declining. She laments that people move, failing to forward their new addresses. “We’re losing touch,” she said.

I also attended Gorton from 1963-1965. They were my best years. I hope that if the City ever decides to close Gorton, former graduates will be invited to tour the school. It is a time that I will never forget.
