Gov. Francis Farms 5K ’Stomp Out ALS’ this Saturday

Wild Bill’s 5K to “Stomp Out ALS” will take place this Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in Governor Francis Farms. The event will include a two-mile path for walkers and a five-mile course for runners. The top three finishers in each division will be recognized. The male and female with the fastest time in each division will also be given prizes.

Sisters Kerri Friel and Kristen Hopkins, whose father, Bill Hopkins, was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in November, organized the run/walk.

ALS is a nerve cell disease that prevents the brain from sending messages to the body’s muscles. Although the disease is rare, there is no known cure.

Kerri and Kristen’s father began to have symptoms in late August and can now no longer walk or speak. The 5K will help raise funds for the ALS Association of Rhode Island.

The registration fee for those who register online before Saturday is $20. Participants can register as www.firm-raching.com. Runners and walkers can also register the day of the event for $30. Participants should meet behind Planet Fitness on Miantonomo Drive.

“[Kristen and I] felt like we needed to be [our father’s] voice,” said Kerri. “This disease can affect anyone. We want to spread awareness.”
