Gov. Francis Farms unites for parade, chili contest

Posted

Governor Francis Farms residents came together for an afternoon of fun events for kids, a chance for neighbors to get together on Saturday. For the first time since the gatherings started more than 10 years ago, they decided who cooks the best chili.

As Erin Taylor who, with Dina Vincent, helped plan the event explained, seven people signed up for the chili cook-off, but when the day arrived the field had narrowed to four. After sampling the chili, – that Tracy Corcoran thoughtfully made corn bread for – people cast their votes. But many chose to make a meal out of the contest, filling their bowls before casting their vote. It was just too good for one bite.

Taylor said many families brought dishes. Donations came from The Coffee Grinder and Yard Works. There was pizza and popcorn, too. There was face painting, and kids had the opportunity to decorate pumpkins and orange tote bags for Halloween.

Taylor said the goal is to bring the community together. A focal point of the afternoon was a block-long parade on Green Road, between the traffic circles on Namquid and Algonquin Drives, with a fire engine and police motorcycles in the lead. Mayor Scott Avedisian went along for the walk, as did Ward 1 Councilman Steven Colantuono.

Cash donations dropped in a jar will go to the Community Food Bank of Rhode Island.
