Greenwood Inn: Warwick family-owned landmark

Family owned and operated since 1954, The Greenwood Inn is the type of place that makes you feel comfortable the minute you walk in the door. Whether you are bringing a date or your mother-in-law, the Papa family is there to greet you, cook for you, and leave you with the feeling that they appreciate your business.

There are photos of the original building, early staff and family members hanging on the wall, alongside a 1967 Warwick Beacon article extolling its praises.

Manager John Papa started working at the restaurant when he was 19 years old, back in 1981. His grandmother was at the door to greet you, right up to her recent death.

I remember many lunches there with Warwick pharmacist Charlie Hachadorian. Arty, his favorite waiter, would bring him his beverage of choice without asking. Arty has been serving customers since 1967. Sully, our waiter last week, has been there for 34 years.

John’s aunt, sister and brothers still cook and tend bar at the recently renovated restaurant, which has a handsome bar and dining area, plus a function room for private parties and an outside patio.

It has been four years since the restaurant was completely renovated, opening up its little nooks and crannies to give a lighter and more spacious appearance.

The menu is traditional American and Italian cuisine, with a number of items that have been favorites for years. You cannot dine there without having a cup of their famous chicken soup, which comes with most of the meals. Accompanied by fresh, soft Italian bread, it is the only way to start your lunch or dinner.

John said that the most popular entrée is the hot turkey plate. The chef roasts a fresh turkey every day, serving it as a full meal or open sandwich ($12.95). It includes mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables of your choice, loads of turkey, cranberry sauce and a stuffing that beat my grandmother’s…and hers was very good.

On my last visit, I ordered the “small appetite” version for $10.50 and couldn’t finish it. Joyce had the baked stuffed shrimp, which are lightly topped with buttery cracker stuffing and cooked to perfection. (5 for $20.99/3 for $16.50). She was pleased with three, getting a plate of spaghetti with garlic bread in place of potato and veggies. The sauce is fabulous.

We have also enjoyed their 10 oz. sirloin steak for $15.75 (Joyce likes it rare, and that’s the way she got it), and veal parmesan dinner, served with pasta…another of their signature dishes ($15.25).

We remember years ago ordering Greenwood Inn’s Hot Antipasto Plate. While it is not on the menu, it is available and is still a popular dish among the regulars. Ask for it, as we did on a previous visit.

You’ll get enormous stuffed mushrooms (the chef should win a prize for stuffing, sauces and gravies), chicken wings, potato skins stuffed with cheese and bacon, calamari (ask for the Asian style) and homemade mozzarella sticks. The huge platter makes a meal for two and is a perfect appetizer for a party of four ($15.99).

Greenwood Inn has a Dinner Package for Two Sunday through Tuesday. You have a choice of an appetizer for two, two cups of chicken soup and a choice of two entrees, which include chicken and broccoli scampi, bourbon glazed pork chops, chicken parmesan, baked stuffed scrod and an eggplant or ravioli special for only $24.99. For another $10 you may add a bottle of house red or white wine.

The restaurant opens daily at 11 a.m., closing at 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, midnight Tuesday through Saturday and 10 p.m. on Sunday. For reservations, information or take-out orders call 738-3334 or 738-3336. The address is 1350 Jefferson Blvd., right at the foot of the Greenwood Bridge.
