Groups to rally outside Langevin office to protest Iran Nuclear Deal

Posted

At 1:30 p.m. today several grassroots groups in opposition to the Iran Nuclear Deal, formerly known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, will rally in front of the offices of Representatives James Langevin and David Cicilline.

Bracha Stuart, regional director of StandWithUs Rhode Island, a pro-Israel force, said, “Our congressmen’s votes will be critical in September. Our senators have announced they support the deal without even a public meeting. This agreement capitulates on all levels, allowing Iran to inspect itself, and must be stopped.”

As it stands currently, the deal is an agreement between the United States, Iran and global powers China, Russia, United Kingdom and France in an effort to curb Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

For several years, as Iran increased their nuclear power, global powers were concerned about the country’s ability to make a nuclear bomb.

Through the deal Iran would be expected to highly reduce its stockpile of uranium as well as their centrifuges for 15 years with no new enriching or heavy water facilities constructed, capping their ability to enrich uranium.

Members from the International Atomic Energy Agency will monitor the country regularly to ensure Iran is following regulations.

In return for abiding by the agreement, Iran will receive relief from economic and nuclear related sanctions from the U.S. the European Union as well as the United Nations Security Council.

In opposition the groups, Christian and secular, will be presenting both congressmen with petitions asking them to vote in disapproval of the deal.

In a press release, David Talan of Providence said his fear is the deal will “fuel terrorism here and around the world.”

He doesn’t want Iran to ever have the capabilities to create a nuclear bomb.

“We need a better deal,” he said, but assured that a “better deal” wouldn’t mean war.

LuAnn Pezzullo from Bristol, a member of the sponsoring committee for “Town Hall Meeting, Main Street USA” will also hand-deliver an invitation to Representative Cicilline to attend as a key speaker in Bristol on September 3.

She said, “Representative Jim Langevin had the courage to hold public meetings, but so far Representative Cicilline has not. He should face the voters before making his decision.”

The group is also inviting Senator Jack Reed to the event as a key speaker.

The rallies will be this afternoons at 1:30 p.m. in front of Langevin’s office, 300 Centerville Rd. and Cicillines, 1070 Main St., Pawtucket.

A vote on the Iran Nuclear Deal is supposedly being held sometime mid-September
