(Not so hot comedy)

Even the talents of Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara can’t save this not-so-hot attempt at comedy.

Witherspoon plays Cooper, a hyperthyroid, intense cop who, in spite of her cop-father’s inspiration and training, is the laughing stock of the San Antonio police force. Her commanding officer takes her off desk duty to accompany a federal marshal escorting a drug dealer and his wife to testify against a drug lord in Dallas, setting the scene for what would hopefully be a funny, exciting road trip.

The two accomplished actors can’t save this badly written, far from funny road disaster, which looks like the writers made it up as they went along. The two opposites look like Mutt and Jeff (remember Mutt and Jeff?) as the tall, sexy Daniella bickers constantly with the short, boy-like Cooper. It doesn’t take long for them to get on your nerves.

Vergara is very funny on TV’s “Modern Family,” with her broken English and quick wit, but there she is blessed with writers who give her good material.

Two women screaming at each other quickly wears the audience down. When they finally bond we have a chance to realize how stupid the story is, right up to the stupid ending.

They are chased by two sets of bad guys, crooked cops being again thrown into the mix. They commandeer a busload of senior citizens who are stereotyped even worse than the inept police.

The only funny moments were seen in the trailers, where Daniella and Cooper are watching themselves being described by TV newscasters. Even the outtakes during the credits aren’t funny.

There are lots of car, truck and bus chases and lots of guns going off. They should have saved a few bullets for the writers.

Rated PG-13, with some profanity, violence and sexual innuendos.
