Halloween spirit shines at Manton Seniors party

No matter what the event or theme, the Manton Seniors have always had a flair for the unusual.

Take Sunday’s annual Halloween Dinner Dance, for example.

Such notables as Kim Kardashian and gangsters like the legendary Al Capone showed up at Twelve Acres Restaurant in Smithfield, where members of the state’s top-ranked independent senior citizens organization enjoyed fine food, family fun, and fellowship.

In the middle of it all was Lori DeVito, the Manton Seniors president who came dressed as Cleopatra and brought many family members who also came dressed in a variety of Halloween garb.

“I wanted to make this a fun time for our entire family,” DeVito noted. “You’re never too old – or too young – to dress up for Halloween and have some good old-fashioned fun as a family.”

DeVito, in fact, was thrilled that her great granddaughter Ashlyn Wheeler, 6, followed her lead and also chose to be Cleopatra Jr. for what some people called “a unique haunted happening.”

With the famed Calamari Brothers providing the musical backdrop during Sunday’s Halloween event and Twelve Acres staff serving the day’s stuffed chicken or baked scrod dinner, people like Bob and Elaine Vita helped make the event extra special.

Bob, in fact, may have had the most unique get-up of all the Manton Seniors who opted out of their usual dinner dress and came decked out in a costume.

“Who are you supposed to be?” a non-costumed Manton member, asked Bob. He replied: “Why, don’t you know who I am? I’m Kim Kardashian.”

Almost instantly, people who were sitting at surrounding tables broke into laughter, and some even replied: “Of course, how could we ever forget you, Kim!”

Elaine, meanwhile, chose another interesting angle for Sunday’s Halloween party, as she chose to be Wonder Woman for a day.

In keeping with tradition, Bill Elliano – dressed as Capone – also donated many of the prizes that DeVito, with the help of Rose Cappola, who came dressed as an Olympic medalist, announced in her role as emcee.

“Today seemed extra special in so many ways,” DeVito said. “I wanted to stress to our members we can have fun by bringing our families to a senior citizens party.”

DeVito then explained that the day’s annual raffle – which featured everything from dishware to Christmas decorations to lamps to gift baskets of wine and food – featured a record-setting 40-plus prizes that were donated by either a Manton member like Elliano or area businesses.

“What a great party,” said Tom Bianco, who once served as the Manton Seniors treasurer and was wearing a sports jacket and necktie. His wife Donna was dressed as an old-time country outlaw and came carrying a fake rifle.

Meanwhile, Claire Cioci used a painted-on hairline mustache and wide-brim fedora and black suit to portray a “Mob Man,” and Theresa Siravo was dressed as a medical operating room nurse and said she was ready to take anyone’s blood pressure, if need be.
