Hawks’ King named R.I. Gatorade POY

Posted

Mike King couldn’t have drawn up a better senior season. Though he still has his sights set on the ultimate capper – a second consecutive state championship for Bishop Hendricken –the honor he received Tuesday was still a pretty good feather in the cap.

King, a senior from Warwick, was named Rhode Island’s Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.

“I was surprised,” King said. “I don’t know who the other finalists are, but I know Rhode Island produces a lot of great baseball players. I was grateful to be chosen.”

King was a star for the Hawks on their run to the 2012 state title and the Boston College-bound senior has been even better this year. He finished the regular season 7-0 with a 0.30 ERA. In 47 innings, he struck out 67 and walked just seven.

On top of his pitching prowess, King has been a key part of Hendricken’s lineup. He’s hitting .469 with 18 RBI.
